Test piece (gauge swatch)
Crochet or knit a small piece in the pattern you will use later, measure width and height and weigh it on a kitchen scale.
The yarn amount calculator of the Wooltasia web app: weigh a swatch, enter skein data and estimate the yarn you need per color.
Tap the apps icon in the top right of the project overview and open the Yarn amount calculator. It is part of the Supporter subscription.
First choose the project. Then you see the motif, the format and the input fields.
Crochet or knit a small piece in the pattern you will use later, measure width and height and weigh it on a kitchen scale.
Pick the yarn length per skein (50 to 500 meters) and the skein weight (25 to 200 grams) as printed on your yarn label.
The switch decides whether the app calculates the total yarn or only the remaining part, meaning the pixels still open. The percentage next to it shows how much is left.
The test piece does not have to be perfect. A rough piece is enough and keeps you from running short later or ending up with too much yarn.
After tapping Calculate yarn needed you get, per color:
The values refer to the skein weight you picked, which is shown above the list. For techniques that need the same amount of every color, such as doubleface or alternating colors, the app points that out explicitly.
Your entries are stored, so you do not have to type them again for the next project.
The app estimates from the area and the weight of your test piece. Stitch pattern, yarn tension and edge stitches make a difference. If in doubt, take one skein more.
Yes. Switch to remaining and the app only counts the pixels you still have to check off.
