Editing patterns

The Wooltasia web app Template Editor: tools, layers, text and frames explained step by step.

SectionsGuides

Where can I find the Template Editor?

In the project overview, open the Extras section and tap Template Editor. It is part of the Standard subscription.

There you edit the calculated pattern: fix single pixels, add a text layer, add a frame, or clean up the palette. Everything you change goes straight into the project and therefore into the pixel grid as well.

Important
The base layer always holds your original image and cannot be edited. Your changes live in their own layers on top and can be hidden or deleted at any time.

Tools, keyboard and palette

Tools

  • Move: select the layer at the position you tap
  • Eyedropper: pick a color directly from the motif
  • Pencil: paint pixels, adjustable brush size
  • Eraser: remove pixels, adjustable brush size
  • Fill: fill a connected area with the current color

Keyboard on desktop

  • Ctrl/Cmd + Z: undo
  • Ctrl/Cmd + Y or Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + Z: redo
  • Ctrl/Cmd + E: new pixel layer
  • Ctrl/Cmd + S: save
  • Delete: remove the active layer

Edit the palette

  • Add more colors until the maximum of your craft type is reached
  • Remove unused colors tidies up the palette
  • Colors that are used in the project are kept

Which layers are there?

  • Pixel layer: draw freely, as many layers as you like
  • Background color: fills the background with one color from your palette
  • Text layer: text on top of the motif, see below
  • Frame layer: a finished frame from the catalog, see below

Use Add layer to choose the layer type. The eye icon hides and shows a layer, the order can be changed, and Delete removes the active layer (except the base layer).

Text layers

Text layers require the Supporter subscription. Existing texts stay visible without a subscription, but you cannot edit them.

You can set:

  • the text itself
  • the font: sans serif, serif, monospace and more fonts from the catalog
  • text size, rotation and position (X and Y)
  • the color

For doubleface projects there are two extra switches: Show on both sides and Invert color on the opposite side. Convert to pixel layer turns the text into regular pixels, after that it is no longer editable as text.

Pattern frames

A frame layer puts a finished frame around your motif:

  1. Choose Add layer and Frame layer. The catalog Select a frame opens.
  2. The catalog only shows frames that fit your project size. Frames with a higher minimum size are hidden, the tabs filter by frame sets.
  3. Choose the placement: Inside or Outside the motif.
  4. Set the margin to the edge so the frame does not sit directly on the motif.
  5. Depending on the frame you color one or two regions with colors from your palette.

Change frame style swaps the frame later without creating a new layer. Placement, margin and colors are kept.

Saving and back to the pixel grid

In the top right of the editor you find undo, redo and save. The save button is greyed out as long as there is nothing to save. For synced projects the editor also shows the sync status.

If you leave the editor with unsaved changes, the app asks whether you want to leave without saving. Afterwards the updated pattern is ready to be checked off in the pixel grid.

Common questions

Why can I not edit the base layer?

The base layer keeps the original image. Put your corrections into a pixel layer on top, that way you can always compare them to the calculated motif.

Why is there no text layer in the layer menu?

Text layers are part of the Supporter subscription. Without it the entry stays locked and points you to the upgrade.
